Find Peace
“The quieter you become, the more you can hear” ~ Ram Dass
When I was a young girl, I began having trouble falling asleep at bedtime. My mind would replay most of the day, over and over. Adding to the replays were new thoughts, “if I said this instead of that, the situation would have had a better outcome”. It was a never ending loop of reviewing and critiquing. Ruminating, it could keep anybody up at night!
One night, as my mother was giving me a sweet hug and kiss goodnight, I confided in her my difficulty falling asleep. Oooh, my mother, Laura Jean, always ahead of the curve. She proceeded to teach me an “easy way to relax for sleep”. With her gentle voice, she told me to think about my feet…let them relax… each toe so soft, then my legs…. and so on, in this manner.
I’m not sure my mother was aware but, the method of relaxation she was teaching me was actually a body scan meditation! I began using Laura Jean’s technique for easing into sleep most nights. I continue to use it today, and I still hear her voice.
As meditation was regular practice in the classroom throughout my massage therapy education, it slowly became as natural a daily routine as brushing my teeth. I have been practicing meditation for more than 20 years. My hope is, this little blog will inspire others to lean in, and discover the sense of peace and calm that I’ve found through varying forms of meditation. Namaste
